'Believe, Excite, Succeed, Together'

Equality and Diversity

At Welbourn Church of England Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, sexual orientation, age or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and ability to participate fully in school life.

We address discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying and stereotypes and by creating an environment which promotes respect for all.

At Welbourn Church of England Primary School, we believe that diversity is a strength which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit us.

Equality Objectives

Objective 1

Improve Absence Among Disadvantaged Pupils

Why? Last academic year whole school attendance was inline with national figures but tracking highlights that specific vulnerable groups have disproportionately higher absence rates.

Actions:

  • Implement a targeted attendance strategy, offering personalised support for families facing barriers to attendance.
  • Strengthen communication and engagement with parents/carers to emphasise the importance of regular attendance.
  • Work with external agencies to provide additional support where needed.
  • Apply the policy fairly and consistently to all pupils

Outcome: Attendance rates for disadvantaged pupils will improve, reducing persistent absence and increasing engagement with learning.

Objective 2

Improve Accessibility and Inclusivity for Pupils with SEND and Additional Needs

Why? Welbourn C of E Primary School is committed to ensuring full participation for all pupils, including those with SEND or physical disabilities and this is an integral part of the vision for the school.

Actions:

  • Ensure that classroom adaptations and reasonable adjustments are consistently implemented across the school.
  • Provide staff training on adaptive teaching, neurodiversity, and assistive technologies.
  • Conduct a site-wide accessibility audit and implement necessary adjustments.

Outcome: Pupils with SEND and additional needs will have improved access to learning and school facilities, promoting greater independence and achievement

Objective 3

Promote Diversity and Representation in the Curriculum

Why? At Welbourn C of E Primary School the community we serve is largely from a white British background, and we want to ensure that all children feel seen, valued, and represented in their learning experiences.

Actions:

  • Expand Welbourn’s library English curriculum and classroom resources to include literature and texts that reflect diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
  • Incorporate real-life role models from underrepresented groups into lessons and assemblies.
  • Provide staff training on unconscious bias and ensure the curriculum challenges stereotypes.

Outcome: Pupils will develop a broader understanding of diversity, with an improved sense of belonging and inclusion in the school community.

Equality in Teaching and Learning

We provide all our pupils with the opportunity to succeed and to reach their full potential. We do this by:

  • Ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society
  • Using materials that reflect the diversity of the school, population and local community without stereotyping
  • Promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice
  • Providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of other cultures
  • Seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education
  • Utilising teaching approaches appropriate for the whole school population which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils.

Equality in Admissions and Exclusions

Our admissions arrangements are fair and transparent and do not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion, belief, disability and/or socio-economic background.

Equal Opportunities for Staff

All staff appointments are made on the basis of merit and ability and in compliance with the law.
